Give back to the local rural community and spend time with the local students by teaching English in one of the many schools in and around Singburi.
Teaching in rural schools will not only help the students broaden their minds, but it will also prove to be a fulfilling experience for you. The way you get to teach is entirely up to you. For example, you may create real-life situations, games and other activities while utilizing the English language. There is a lot of freedom for your own creativity to bring new forms of teaching and ideas into the classroom!

In this program volunteers work with students at various schools teaching English classes. We have strong relationships with several primary and secondary schools and the age of students may be between 4 and 18 years old.

The different schools accept an informal approach to teaching. This means that we will not have to conform to the local Thai teaching methods or style, but rather that everyone will be free to choose their own way of teaching and may bring their own ideas into class. It is important to understand that the methods of teaching are less important than the attitude of the participant towards the students. In addition, the subjects to be taught can alter, depending on current activities in the schools which might include, for example, environmental issues or current festivals.

The teaching program serves a dual purpose. First it is meant to help children in rural Thailand to have a chance to speak more English (usually even their teachers aren’t up to standard), and secondly it will give you an insight into the Thai education system as well as a good chance to become good friends with students and teachers.

It can be nice to bring presents with you for students. In our experience the students are less interested in toys (some typical toys of your country might be interesting), but pictures of your family, house or pets is always well received.

Singburi - School Placement (Teaching English)

Aims & Objectives

The aims and objectives of this particular program fall under the jurisdiction of the Thai government. In recent years, the government has placed a continued emphasis on the teaching of the English language. Despite this, English literacy rates in Thailand remain one the lowest in Asia. Our aim is to continue to improve the children’s prospects by teaching them English. On the other hand, you will also gain teaching experience, an invaluable life skill.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Introduction Day
Your project starts with an introduction day on the first Monday including a tour of the area surrounding the accommodation, available facilities, cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns as well as some basic local language lessons. Your program will continue as usual from Tuesday onward throughout the rest of the week.

Monday to Friday
Depending on the school, volunteers leave the center between 07:00 and 09:00. A portion of your first day will be spent with a morning tour of the school and all its facilities, organizing and balancing a range of classes during your stay. You should be prepared to teach 3-6 hours a day. You will have lunch at the school and can expect to remain there until 15-16:00 in the afternoon. Thai schools show respect to the King of Thailand through a ceremony and you might be asked to take part this unique morning ritual.

Additional Activities & Events
Tuesday
Visit the night market in Tha Kham. Taste all types of Thai food, stock up on inexpensive clothing or just soak in the atmosphere of this small town!

Wednesday
Half day of teaching where after lunch we offer a trip into Singburi. You can choose to use the swimming pool, go for a Thai massage or take advantage of a trip to a shopping center. In the evening you will have the option to attend a self-service BBQ for dinner (Thai style, of course!). This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise with all the other participants, eat great food and enjoy some music.

Thursday
There is a trip to a shopping mall, where you can buy any essentials, snacks, ice cream, coffee and western food like pizza.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free in this program. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend. Friendly staff are always there to make your choice easier with advice.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

School & Public Holidays

When confirming your dates, please take note of the long school holidays and other public holidays. On public holidays the project is either closed giving you the possibility to join the local festivities (such as the Songkran festival for the Thai New Year in mid-April that is a particularly eye-opening and fun experience!), or alternatively you will join other programs where for example light renovation and construction work is available.

School Holidays
During school holidays, there is an option to join English camps that are regularly requested by the local community. In 2019 the school holidays run from mid-March until mid-May and there is a mid-term break in October. In 2020 the school holidays run from March until May, and from October until mid-November. There are 4 different English camps during the school holidays:

1. Teaching at our Greenway Center, a registered school with a classroom, which is for the local children around the village
2. Teaching at summer camps that some of the schools arrange
3. Teaching at summer camps all over the province that the Singburi Government arrange
4. Teaching the teachers; we work alongside the government/schools to teach the teachers during the holidays.
5. In the event of a shortage of students during the summer camps, there is renovation and construction work available.

Mandatory Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age of 18
Intermediate level of competency in English
Police Clearance Certificate on sign-up

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering work and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. At times, alterations in activities are due to changes in local conditions. This can be part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that it is.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our volunteer partner in Thailand is based in Singburi. The focus is on experiencing a range of local cultural activities and traditions, as well as joining ongoing volunteer programs where you can give your time and energy for a few hours each day. The projects and activities we have chosen are interchangeable locally, as it is possible to make a positive contribution within a week. The exception to this is teaching where we believe it is most beneficial to yourself and the school if you commit to four weeks and construction, where we recommend a minimum stay of two weeks. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. This week gives you the opportunity to learn more about Thailand, bond with your fellow volunteers, and immerse in the area and culture. This is your kick start into a new country and way of life!

During the Culture Week, you will learn about Thai culture, get an insight into the language and have a taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world. You will visit Wat Phra Non Jaksi Worovihan temple (famous for containing one of the largest indoor reclining Buddha statues), the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, have monkeys jumping on your head in Lopburi and much more! Moreover, you will get to meet people, take a Thai cooking lesson, learn the basics of the language, and get a first-hand understanding of the Thai way of life. Evenings during the Culture Week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

The purpose of this program is to help you get a reasonable understanding of the manners, norms, and etiquette that is inherent in Thai society. This week is also perfect for you to get to know and bond with other new participants. It is great for those who will be spending a prolonged period in the country, but also for those who have little time and want to experience Thailand at its best. Its emphasis is on educational factors, such as the language, cooking, cultural and historical aspects of Thailand.

Houd er rekening mee

Dress Code
Casual dress is appropriate during your time at the school, however, no see-through clothes or low-cut tops are permitted.

Weather
Thailand is a tropical country with occasional violent storms, heavy rains and floods. During such times, the program schedule may be subject to change.

Transportation
Our Eco-Houses are located about 10-15 kilometer from the city, it's a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation, but it can be done by local taxi. Our staff can assist you calling a taxi at any time. There are also bicycles available for volunteers to borrow.

Money
There are a number of banks and ATM machines nearby. The nearest one is just about 2 km away at Tha Kham market.

Local SIM Card
We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your whole time in Thailand for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the other participants, staff and family back home. This becomes especially useful if travelling to your project destination by yourself. You can usually get one at the airport for free or at a low cost. You can also receive one at the accommodation on arrival for free.
