Singburi - School Placement

Aims & Objectives

The aims and objectives of this particular program fall under the jurisdiction of the Thai government. In recent years, the government has placed a continued emphasis on the teaching of the English language. Despite this, English literacy rates in Thailand remain one the lowest in Asia. Our aim is to continue to improve the children’s prospects by teaching them English. On the other hand, you will also gain teaching experience, an invaluable life skill.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Monday to Friday
Depending on the school, volunteers leave the center between 07:00 and 09:00. A portion of your first day will be spent with a morning tour of the school and all its facilities, organizing and balancing a range of classes during your stay. You should be prepared to teach 3-6 hours a day. You will have lunch at the school and can expect to remain there until 15-16:00 in the afternoon. Thai schools show respect to the King of Thailand through a ceremony and you might be asked to take part this unique morning ritual.

Tuesday
Visit the night market in Tha Kham. Taste all types of Thai food, stock up on inexpensive clothing or just soak in the atmosphere of this small town!

Wednesday
Half day of teaching where after lunch we offer a trip into Singburi. You can choose to use the swimming pool, go for a Thai massage or take advantage of a trip to a shopping center. In the evening you will have the option to attend a Thai BBQ at a local restaurant. This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise with all the other participants, eat great food and enjoy some music.

Thursday
There is a trip to a shopping mall (including a large Tesco Lotus), where you can buy any essentials, snacks, ice cream, coffee and western food like pizza.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free in this program. Relax at the Eco-House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many more sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok city for the weekend. Friendly staff are always there to make your choice easier with advice.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Activities & Events

Tuesday Evening:
Every Tuesday is BBQ night, which provides a perfect opportunity to relax and spend time with other participants on our lakeside restaurant!

Wednesday Evening:
Cozy movie night at the accommodation

Thursday Evening:
We will head to a nearby local restaurant to enjoy one of Southeast Asia’s favorite activities - Karaoke! (or "sing a song", as the locals like to call it).

School & Public Holidays

When confirming your dates, please take note of the long school holidays (mid-March until mid-May, and a mid-term break in October) and other public holidays (such as the Songkran festival for the Thai New Year in mid-April that is a particularly eye-opening and fun experience!), which schools may take advantage of. During such times, there is an option to join special classes and English camps that are regularly requested by the local community.

Public Holidays 2018
22-23 October
10 & 31 December

Public Holidays 2019
01 & 16 January
19 February
08, 13-17 April
01, 19 & 23 May

05, 10 & 31 December

There are 4 different English camps during the summer holidays (mid-March till mid-May) and the mid-term break in October:

1. Teaching at our Greenway Center, a registered school with a classroom, which is for the local children around the village
2. Teaching at summer camps that some of the schools arrange
3. Teaching at summer camps all over the province that the Singburi Government arrange
4. Teaching the teachers; we work alongside the government/schools to teach the teachers during the holidays.

Mandatory Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age of 18
Police clearance certificate
Basic level of competency in English
Copy of your passport and CV to send to the project

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering work and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. At times, alterations in activities are due to changes in local conditions. This can be part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that it is.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our volunteer partner in Thailand is based in Singburi. The focus is on experiencing a range of local cultural activities and traditions, as well as joining ongoing volunteer programs where you can give your time and energy for a few hours each day. The projects and activities we have chosen are interchangeable locally, as it is possible to make a positive contribution within a week. The exception to this is teaching where we believe it is most beneficial to yourself and the school if you commit to four weeks and construction, where we recommend a minimum stay of two weeks. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include an introduction week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. This week gives you the opportunity to learn more about Thailand, bond with your fellow volunteers, and immerse in the area and culture. This is your kick start into a new country and way of life!

During the introduction week, you will learn about Thai culture, get an insight into the language and have a taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world. You will visit Wat Phra Non Jaksi Worovihan temple (famous for containing one of the largest indoor reclining Buddha statues), the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, have monkeys jumping on your head in Lopburi and much more! Moreover, you will get to meet people, take a Thai cooking lesson, learn the basics of the language, and get a first-hand understanding of the Thai way of life. Evenings during the introduction week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

The aim of the introduction week is to help you get a reasonable understanding of the manners, norms, and etiquette that is inherent in Thai society. It is aimed at those who will be spending a prolonged period in the country. Its emphasis is on educational factors, such as the language, cooking, cultural and historical aspects of Thailand.

Accommodatie

Location Description
Greenway's Singburi camp is located on the riverside (River Noi - Little River) in the village of Tha Kham, near the small city of Singburi. There are several temples in the area, some of which are quite well-known.

These 3 accommodation options consisting of small bungalows are within walking distance from the nearest towns of Tha Kham and Tha Chang. Alternatively you can take a bicycle to these local towns, where you can find ATM’s, pharmacies, doctors, convience stores and local food markets. The local school Wat Klang Tha Kham also has a swimming pool that you are allowed to use for 50 baht.

The distance to the town of Singburi is 8 to 15 km depending on which accommodation option you choose. It takes 10 to 15 minutes into Singburi by car, where you will find all the amenities you need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants. The Brown House:
- This is where you stay during the Culture Week.

The Twin House:

The Lemon House:
- The Lemon House has fewer bungalows and is slightly quieter than the Twin House.

Arrival Information
We can pick you up from either Don Mueang Airport (DMK) or Bangkok International Airport (BKK) anytime on Saturday or Sunday. Saturday arrivals can stay at our accommodation in Singburi at no extra cost.

Our transfer coordinator, who meets you upon your arrival, arranges your transfer from the airport to Mo Chit Northern Bangkok bus station and then further on to Singburi bus station, where you will be met by one of our local coordinators who will take you to your accommodation.

How to Get to the Meeting Point at Bangkok International Airport (BKK):

After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and turn right and proceed to ENTRANCE 4. Our coordinator will be waiting for you inside the building in front of this entrance with a sign saying 'Green Lion'. Our coordinator will not move to find you, he has firm instructions to stay at ENTRANCE 4. You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you arrive before 16:00, we will transfer you to Singburi on the same day. Arrivals after 16:00 may have to stay in a hotel next to BKK/DMK Airport for one night. In this case, we still will pick you up at the airport and accompany you to the hotel. There is no extra cost for you. You will be given a time to meet back at the meeting point the following morning for transfer to Singburi.

This becomes especially useful if travelling to your project destination by yourself. You can usually get one at the airport for free or at a low cost. You can also receive one at the accommodation on arrival for free.

Early/Late Arrival Instructions

By Taxi
A shuttle taxi hired at the airport can bring you straight to our center within 3 hours. It should not cost you more than 2000-3000 baht, but it is important to confirm the price beforehand. More expensive options (limousine service) can also be arranged from the airport at higher prices.

By Bus
When you arrive at Bangkok International airport (Suvarnabhumi International Airport), pronounced: su-wan-na-poom), you can continue your trip by BTS airport rail link. This is the easiest and cheapest way to travel to the bus station. The distance from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Mo-Chit is around 40 km. You should take the rail link all the way to the end station at Phaya Thai which connects you to the BTS skytrain. Take the skytrain to Mo Chit station the last on the line. The station is about 3 km from the bus terminal. Once you get to Moh-Chit bus terminal, please enter the ground floor to the right and choose to buy a ticket for the first class bus ("1st class" in Thai: Bpau neung) to Singburi Bus Station.

Start: Mo Chit Northern Bangkok Bus Station
Destination: Singburi Bus Station
When: 05:00-18:00 every day
Duration: 3 hours
Price: 115 baht

Once the bus leaves the bus terminal, please call the program manager (Phil) on +66 (0) 86 001 2838 to confirm your arrival time and to allow us to have a coordinator ready to pick you up from the Singburi bus station when you arrive.

Maaltijden

Local (vegetarian) dishes on site, 3 meals a day during weekdays, 2 meals a day during weekends (brunch and dinner). The meals will be typical Thai fare, including plenty of rice dishes. You will have lunch at the school during the week. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Houd er rekening mee

Dress code:
Casual dress is appropriate during your time at the school, however, no see-through clothes or low-cut tops are permitted.

Weather:
Thailand is a tropical country with occasional violent storms, heavy rains and floods. During such times, the program schedule may be subject to change.

Transportation:
Our Eco-Houses are located about 10-15 kilometer from the city, it's a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation, but it can be done by local taxi. Our staff can assist you calling a taxi at any time. There are also bicycles available for volunteers to borrow.

Money:
There are a number of banks and ATM machines nearby. The nearest one is just about 2 km away at Tha Kham market.

International phone calls:
SIM cards can be purchased at many stores in Thailand and even at the local village Tha Kham or Tha Chang. It is best to buy a Thai SIM card so you can contact any of our staff without having to worry about costs. These cards can also be used to call back to your home country (Thook Dee International phone card which costs 100 baht). Don’t hesitate to ask your coordinator for assistance.
